Tacos in Thailand

We were in the mood for a little Western food tonight – and it was delicious!

Sunrise to sunset.

Yesterday we woke up to the sunrise in our rickety bungalow on stilts at the Power Beach “Resort” on Phi Phi ready for a travel day. We took one last look at our hillside private beach abode and boarded the simple yet effective longtail boat taking us to the main pier. There we would catch … Continue reading

Viewpoint – 30 min +/- an hour.

We took the route less traveled. It was at the guidance of our hotel owner, though she mostly just pointed up the hill saying “yes viewpoint, yes town”. There was a fork in the path and a sign contradicting the previous directions with “30 min” written in paint next to an arrow. Unfortunately we already … Continue reading

Travel day: toward the beaches

We got up at 7am, per the usual, and headed down to get some coffee. The guest house, SK, was the least hospitable of our accommodations thus far. However we had just come from the Four Seasons and any place would have seemed inferior so it was probably appropriate to lower our expectations with this … Continue reading

Jupiter and Fireworks.

We found the Upper Deck, a nice rooftop bar where we could relax under the stars while enjoying a Leo and a Sang Som. Some floating lanterns caught our attention and we noticed that Jupiter was directly over head. Then we were surprised by an unexpected firework show towards the river. None of which we would have been able to see had we stayed on the streets below.

Floored by the Seasons

The “pool villa” suite is the coolest room I’ve stayed in at a resort (thus far.) If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up – if in Chiang Mai.

Wat spotting

After a relaxing day at the Four Seasons we headed out to visit two historic Wat sites as described in the previous Our day in Chiang Mai.

Taking the night train.

Waiting to hop a train in Thailand is becoming a reoccurring theme: It’s hot and tense while you never know what’s coming down the track – or when. We enjoy watching tons of earth shaking steel rumble but we’d rather get on board before the station dogs sick their fangs in our direction.

And then…

Promthong Mansion

We found a great guest house in Ayutthaya that provided a cool oasis from the 100 degree day biking around the ancient wats.

The little engine that could not

There’s something romantic about hooking up with an good ol’ diesel locomotive. Except for this particular little engine unhitched and snuck off just three stops toward Ayutthaya stranding us with no locomotive in north Bangkok. We could have Tuk Tuk’d that far. Plus we didn’t even get lunch out of the deal – some engines are just weak.

Luckily after a couple hours and as many beers, rescue came in the arrival of a proper powerplant. This engine treated us right while pulling us through to the ancient city.
