We’ve made it to the other coast!
The drive to Death Valley from Vegas is a lot of sandy vistas, but the drive out to the west is hilly and spectacular. We saw an F-15 flyover Panamint Valley (probably a training exercise from the Nellis Air Force Base). C was thrilled when we spotted it dead ahead through our windshield coming down the mountain. It banked sharply before disappearing. From our campsite 50 miles away, we could faintly hear the jets flying all night.
We stopped at Panamint Springs Resort for an ice cream, and were quickly persuaded by the great beer selection to have a cold brew instead. We met the owners and got some camping advice. It was a great little oasis.
Our campsite was our favorite by far – we slept on a little island! We loved the little town of Big Pine, CA. They’re gearing up right now for “Mule Days”, a Memorial Day festival that happens in Bishop, CA. They’re expecting tens of thousands of people – and probably as many donkeys. Lizzie would love it 😉
