Our garden

I’ve been doing a lot of work in our garden. It helps when we have record high temps in the Pacific Northwest – no one likes to weed in the drizzle. Yesterday I planted more lettuces, zucchini, cucumbers and pumpkins. The lettuces I started in the greenhouse a few weeks ago, so they were spindly little pinches of mini leaves going into the dirt. Last time I tried that, the birds ate them all in 10 minutes. So we’ll see how these go. The radishes and spinach were direct planted into the ground in March. It is so exciting to pick the radishes. They are over crowded, so I’ve been picking some to make room for the others and let them grow bigger. Maybe I should have thinned things earlier. Thankfully radishes can be planted a few times a year, so I can learn as I go. In fact, there is a lot of gardening that can be done all year in the PNW because of the mild winters. We’ll try to keep things going all year.

We have a lot of morning glory in our yard. It will be lovely climbing the fences around the yard, but is getting a little too cozy with the asparagus. It’s amazing how much the garden changes day to day.

I got a part time job at a nursery in Arlington (plants, not babies). It’s called Garden Treasures, and has an organic grocery, nursery and farm. I’m already learning a lot about the plants that do best in our area, and hopefully will be able to keep dipping my thumb in the green dye there.

My next challenge: tomatoes.

Garden looks great! We will see it for real soon and may be able to help you with the weeding.
